Flexpansion

Flexpansion free for Android on Google PlayCn u undrstd ths msg? The smartphone app Flexpansion can by spelling out text message abbreviations. Instead of trying to write a hard-to-read text message or email that only uses abbreviations to speed up typing, use Flexpansion to expand abbreviations to their complete words in the same amount of time or even faster.

Flexpansion, itself an abbreviation of Flexible Text Expansion, is available free for Android on Google Play. As a replacement of the keyboards for Android OS and Swype, unlike its predecessors, Flexpansion is the only app in the market that expands abbreviations as users type their message using its Turbo prediction mode.

After downloading, activate it as your smartphone’s current input method (keyboard) and choose a language pack (such as English UK) to download to use. The app allows users to customize settings to suit their messaging style, determining the prediction mode, layout, auto text options and look and feel of the keyboard. When using its default Turbo prediction mode, typing a message of only abbreviations will result in its complete text: either by setting the keyboard to autocomplete, which inserts suggested words after using the space bar, or by choosing the suggested words that appear above the keyboard.

Flexpansion comes with built-in shortcuts and commands to speed up typing. To reject word suggestions quickly, do a long-press on the space bar. Swipe-right on the keyboard to redo and swipe-left to undo the expansion or delete to the previous space. To hide the keyboard, swipe-down, and to bring it back tap in the text. The app also colour codes next-word predictions or autocorrections. Suggested words in blue are what you’ve typed before and those in red are saved words or abbreviations.

Using the app’s ability to translate words typed out phonetically, even those not versed in text message speak can understand what another user is saying. This also prevents meaning from being lost in obscure text message abbreviations. When typed with Flexpansion, the iconic line from one of Shakespeare’s sonnets, even when written in the abbreviated form, ‘Shll i cmpre thee 2 a smmr’s dy?’, can be read to its fullest poetry of ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’.

The app also has the ability to predict different variations of an abbreviation and will expand those to become the same word. For example, ‘Building’ is suggested when typing in ‘bld,’ ‘bild’ or ‘blg’ etc.. Users have the option of including words, phrases and abbreviations into a personal dictionary such as the names of frequented locations or meeting places to speed up commonly-used words. Users can even invent their own abbreviations to save.

To personalize the app even more to the user, Flexpansion is made to rapidly adapt to your writing style to make better suggestions and improve word prediction. The makers of the app will very soon be updating it to have the ability to learn from your email messages from Gmail, and other documents.

While Flexpansion is free, the pro version of the app has certain advantages over the free version. The pro version includes features like choosing more colours, themes, and sounds. Other free features available include voice recognition, access to numbers and punctuation without leaving the main keyboard, by long-pressing letters, and an ABC layout of the keyboard. They are planning to eventually offer the ability to back-up and share your personal dictionary. Flexpansion also noted it would be further improving the app’s prediction and ease of installation in the next month.

They see huge potential for helping professionals with targeted versions, such as company- or topic-specific ones for lawyers, financial advisers, medics, or indeed anyone working, studying or researching in an area with its own vocabulary. In their initial promotional period they are giving away a limited number of professional packages, and are especially keen to hear from you if you are using Android tablets professionally and want to greatly increase your productivity at no cost.
