Emerging in a market dominated by Android and iPhone platforms, Windows Phone 8 is first entering the fray with Samsung’s ATIV S. On the new phone, the Windows Phone Blog commented. “Samsung built the ATIV S with the latest and greatest technology, especially for anyone who want a superphone that’s equal parts powerhouse and head turner.”
Two models are available with different storage capabilities, 16GB and 32GB, with a MicroSD/microSDHC slot available for more storage. Sustaining the phone’s high performance and new technological and application offerings is a 2300mAh battery running the system.
At the forefront of technology, the browser of Windows Phone 8 supports HTML5 and 4G connections while the ATIV serves as a NFC (Near Field Communication) device, making it able to make mobile payments using the phone similar to a card for purchases. For businesses, the Windows Phone 8 includes applications for mobile users to view files in Office 2007, Office 2003 and PDF format on the go. It also includes free cloud storage with SkyDrive for Windows to access files from any location.
The design of the ATIV is made to optimise the Windows Phone 8 experience and is described as ‘perfectly balanced.’
“When designing a handheld device engineers walk a fine line – too light and the device feels cheap, too heavy and it’s cumbersome,” said the Windows Phone Blog. “Samsung’s ATIV S walks this tightrope with ease; it’s solid but not heavy, and it’s perfectly balanced so your hand doesn’t get fatigued.”
The ATIV S is even bigger than the iPhone 5’s 4 inch display, if its rumored specifications are true. As one of the biggest smartphone screens on the market, the ATIV’s high resolution display (720 x 1280 pixels) is made from Corning Gorilla Glass 2, making it thin yet strong. The thinnest of Samsung’s Windows Phones, the ATIV is a slim 8.7 mm and weighs 4.76 oz. A physical Windows button is prominent on the front, with all of its buttons made of aluminium.
For pictures and video, the ATIV has two cameras, an 8MP camera with autofocus and LED flash on the rear and a 1.9MP camera on the front. Mobile phone users are able to make Skype or video calls with the camera capable of recording in 1080p HD.
