Learning Search Engine Optimisation

Learning SEOHow to Learn SEO

When Internet users search for a keyword, they read the results on the first page of their search results and close the page. If your website is not in the first 10 listings provided on the Internet search results, Search queries determine exposure and therefore profit for a website. To effectively position yourself in the top of search engine results to make the most profit and gain exposure, you must engage in search engine optimisation.

Choose keywords for SEO

While websites are tempted to choose highly competitive keywords to try to gain the most audience at the top of the search engine rankings, they usually waste resources trying to reach this goal. By knowing what keywords describe your site and its content, product or service, you will have the proper keywords for search engine optimisation. The keywords you choose to define your site should relate in some way to the keywords people search for. Your business goals also have a role in choosing the right keywords.

If you are a start-up, do not target one word or common keywords. Be specific in your keywords and do not choose keywords that are difficult and competitive to gain rankings in. Avoid the singular version of a keyword, such as ‘computers’ vs. ‘computer,’ because plural versions will rank lower on result pages. Also account for multiple meanings of certain keywords, such as ‘screen,’ which can mean anything from an electronic screen to a door screen. Read about the Search Demand Curve on our Keyword Research page. Targeting low traffic and competition keywords does see more conversions and traffic than the competitive short tail keywords. A mixture of both is good with a search engine marketing package.

Sign up for Google tools.

Tools provided by Google like Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools are free to use and very valuable in evaluating the data of your website and determining how much traffic your website should see from natural organic rankings.

Optimise your website for SEO

After picking your keywords, optimise the design and structural elements of your website to reflect your keywords for SEO. When users enter search queries, the title of the search results are created by the web pages’ HTML element called title tags. Other elements such as URLs and anchor text, the text when linking to another page, should also be optimised for SEO. Within your website, increase the linkability of your social media accounts onto your site by adding buttons or widgets.

Search keywords in search engines

After waiting awhile for the major search engines like Google, Yahoo! or Bing to find your website, search for your website and keywords to find your rankings. To further test for a keyword’s popularity and rankings, use Google’s Keyword Tool that allows the search for keywords and their results. Google Analytics along with Google Webmaster Tools should have started to collect data for you by now.

Analyse data and keywords

Continue to monitor data and rankings to determine what keywords are profitable and which ones are not. Tools like Google Analytics track the success of your keywords and help show how you can further optimise your website. Google Analytics will track what happens after a customer clicks on your rankings, providing you with the tools to measure important metrics like bounce rate and keyword conversions.

Bounce rate is the percentage of people who do not visit more of your website other than the page they are linked to and is an important measure of how engaged users are with your website design and content. Keyword conversions are valuable actions taken by a person while on your website, whether making a purchase or looking up more information. Keyword conversion is important because clicks translate into business for your website if you choose the proper keywords.

If keywords are not profitable, wasting resources or have weak rankings, use new ones based on trending data or build on the success of your current most popular keywords. By monitoring your keywords, you can plan keyword optimisation long-term to meet your business goals.
