After creating your website and social media accounts, learning how to engage in social media optimisation and track the success of your social networking is a important step to engaging customers and seeing more traffic.

Like search engine marketing, there are ways to measure social media optimisation to further increase the visibility of your organisation so it appears at the top of search engine results. Instead of using keywords to optimise for search engine results likeSearch Engine Optimisation, social media optimisation involves using tools like social networking sites and bookmarking.

Increase social media linking

One way to measure how your social networking is reaching potential users is to first increase the linking of social media on your website. By changing the design of your website to make it ideal for linking and bookmarking, you will be optimising your website for social media.

Place downloadable social media icons/widgets on your homepage and on individual posts to make it easy for readers of your site to share your content. Depending on what content management system your site is running, sites like WordPress have plugins available to optimise and management your social media.

To know which buttons or widgets to add or to know which social media sites will be the most far-reaching to your audience please contact us for advice. As the most popular social networking sites, Facebook and Twitter are also the most popular to link back to, but there are other tools you can use, such as social news sites like Digg or Reddit. After placing social media buttons to increase the ability of social media linking on your website to optimise it for search engines, analyse the data you receive from Google Analytics to see what posts are liked and or shared the most. By knowing which posts are popular with visitors, you can shape the future of your content to become more successful in your business goals.

On the Standard Reporting tab, you can evaluate metrics related to different social media networks by going to Audience and clicking on Social. From here, you have the option of clicking on Engagement, Action and Pages. By going to Engagement, you can find the number of pages per view, bounce rate, the average time spent during a session and other data. Click on Action to compare different social media networks or different actions within the same social media network. Or go to Pages to see the number of actions on or popularity of each webpage.

How to read Google Analytics and what to look for

Gauge the success of your social media networking by tracking the number of new and unique visitors to your site, how long they spent on a page and the bounce rate (or the percentage of people who only view one page and not any others). You can also check for keyword conversion to see how well your keywords are working, seeing how many users are taking valuable actions on your website like looking for more information or purchasing a product.

From the data provided on Google Analytics, determine how frequently you will update your content to meet the demands of your users and to effectively optimise your site for social media. Sites should have constantly updated content to make readers and social media followers visit your site more, increasing the possibility of sharing and linking your content.
